Santa Clara Officer Fatally Shoots Man Seen Stabbing Roommate, Police Say

The 12-year veteran who fired is on paid leave under standard protocol.

Overview

  • Police say Officer Robert Allsup forced entry just after 6 a.m. Wednesday at a home on the 1800 block of Eisenhower Drive and saw a man straddling his roommate with a raised knife.
  • According to Chief Cory Morgan, Allsup fired four times when the knife hand moved toward the victim, striking the suspect with all four rounds.
  • The suspect was taken to a hospital and died, while the wounded roommate suffered stab wounds to the hands, chest, lung and abdomen and has since been released to continue recovery.
  • Investigators report the attacker used two knives after the first broke at the handle, and the department released still images from Allsup’s body camera showing the encounter.
  • A joint investigation by the Santa Clara Police Department and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is underway, and officers had previously responded to an Aug. 12 dispute at the same address.
