Santa Clara County Sues Metro by T-Mobile Stores for Worker Exploitation

Overview

  • On May 28, Santa Clara County Counsel’s Office filed a civil enforcement lawsuit against owners of five Metro by T-Mobile stores in East San Jose and Milpitas for allegedly exploiting over 60 employees, including minors.
  • The suit alleges systematic underpayment, unpaid overtime, denial of meal and rest breaks, unrecorded cash wages without pay stubs and employment of workers as young as 14 without permits.
  • County attorneys are requesting that the court award back wages to affected employees, additional damages and civil penalties against the defendants.
  • County Counsel Tony LoPresti described the filing as the first in a broader initiative to hold employers accountable for wage theft and labor abuses.
