Santa Ana Winds Push Norte Fire Through Orange County Homes

Extreme offshore Santa Ana winds have created conditions for rapid fire growth, leading to evacuations, opened shelters and public-safety power shutoffs.

Overview

  • The Norte fire, which began near San Clemente and raced into San Juan Capistrano on Friday, has burned about 450–465 acres, destroyed or damaged at least four to six homes and showed little containment early on.
  • More than 400–500 firefighters with air and ground resources were deployed and officials issued evacuation orders for five zones while law enforcement conducted door-to-door warnings and opened shelters in both cities.
  • Two other large blazes — the Bryson Fire in the Malibu hills and the Henderson Fire near Camp Pendleton — burned hundreds to thousands of acres, closed roads including a portion of I-5 and strained regional firefighting capacity.
  • Utilities conducted precautionary public-safety power shutoffs that left well over 200,000 customers without electricity, creating communication and logistical challenges for evacuations and emergency response.
  • The National Weather Service kept Red Flag and high wind warnings in place through Saturday, meaning rapid growth remains possible and officials say containment, structure protection and damage assessments are the immediate priorities.
