Santé Publique France Study Finds Near-Universal Daily Screen Use Among Children Ages 3–11

The newly released Enabee findings provide nationally representative evidence for health officials evaluating children’s screen exposure.

Overview

  • Drawing on Enabee 2022 data for 12,818 pupils in mainland France, the study reports widespread early exposure across preschool and primary ages.
  • Average daily use rose with age to 1h22 for ages 3–5, 1h53 for 6–8, and 2h33 for 9–11, with time about doubling on non‑school days.
  • Television accounted for most screen time among the youngest—71% for ages 3–5 and 60% for 6–8—while consoles, tablets and smartphones gained prominence with age.
  • Device access started early, with nearly half of 11‑year‑olds owning a smartphone before middle school and 15% of under‑6s having a tablet in 2022.
  • Despite a legal minimum age of 13, 25% of 9–11‑year‑olds and 7% of 6–8‑year‑olds used social networks, and children from less‑educated families spent more time and more often had personal devices or bedroom screens, even as most parents limited time more than content.
