Sankranti Exodus Chokes Hyderabad Corridors as Outbound Rush Builds

Police forecast heavy outbound through January 13, with a return surge January 16–19.

Overview

  • Traffic police reported severe evening congestion on key stretches including MGBSDilsukhnagar, areas around Secunderabad and Kacheguda stations, SR NagarLakdikapul, and the MehdipatnamAttapur route, with peaks from about 7:30 p.m. to midnight.
  • Authorities increased on-ground deployment and directed APSRTC and TGSRTC buses to halt only at designated stops, asked private operators to shift pick-ups away from junctions and park in single columns, and routed some services via Outer Ring Road exits.
  • An official advisory flagged heavy passenger movement at major rail and bus hubs and shared real-time updates on Facebook and X, with a travel helpline available at 9010203626.
  • Congestion also intensified across the IT corridor in Cyberabad, including Kukatpally, Miyapur, JNTU and Moosapet, where ongoing highway works compounded delays at points such as Miyapur X Roads and the Patancheru ORR Exit 3 rotary.
  • The state roads minister said toll plazas on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada highway would allow vehicles through without fees during heavy rush, while TGRTC announced 6,431 special buses with fares up to 1.5 times for specials and SCR expanded crowd-management measures at major stations.
