Sankranti Exodus Chokes Hyderabad Corridors and NH-65 as Authorities Move to Ease Jams

Collections continue at toll plazas despite a state waiver request during hours-long queues.

Overview

  • Heavy outflow since Friday night slowed traffic on key city stretches including MGBSDilsukhnagar, the Mehdipatnam corridor, and areas around Secunderabad and Kacheguda stations.
  • On NH-65, Panthangi and Korlapahad toll plazas recorded long lines, with Nalgonda police projecting close to 80,000 vehicles at Panthangi on Saturday and noting 43,000 crossings by 6 p.m.
  • Police deployed drones over Suryapet and Kodad, added personnel at 22 locations, set diversions near NH 365BB, and used handheld FASTag devices to maintain flow.
  • The Roads and Buildings Minister estimated about 12 lakh vehicles would leave the city and directed toll gates to open when backups form, while tolls continue despite the State’s waiver plea.
  • Public transport ramped up with 6,431 TGRTC special buses and South Central Railway crowd measures including extra booking counters and ticket vending machines.
