Sangma Calls for Elected Government in Manipur as BJP MLAs Press Delhi for End to Central Rule

Concern over security and rehabilitation is keeping New Delhi from committing to lift President’s Rule.

Overview

  • Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP president Conrad K. Sangma began a two-day visit to Imphal, meeting civil society groups, displaced families and Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, and said restoring a democratically elected, pro-public government is vital to normalcy.
  • Sangma said the NPP will consult its six Manipur MLAs before deciding on any support to a BJP-led formation, stressing stakeholder engagement and trust-building alongside political steps.
  • About 25 BJP MLAs from Manipur, led by former CM N. Biren Singh, met BJP Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra in New Delhi on October 8 to urge immediate government formation after months under President’s Rule.
  • The BJP legislators have not secured meetings with Amit Shah or J. P. Nadda, with party interlocutors urging cross-community consensus; reporting indicates top leaders remain focused on other polls and wary of immediate changes.
  • Security assessments continue to favor Central oversight, President’s Rule has been extended through February 2026 with the Assembly under suspended animation, and the Manipur Congress has attacked Sangma’s visit as politically motivated.
