SANAA’s Taichung ‘Museumbrary’ Opens Dec. 13, Uniting Art and Books in Central Park

The city-funded complex merges an art museum with a public library to broaden access, helping shift attention beyond Taipei.

Overview

  • The 58,000 sq m complex comprises eight linked cube-like buildings in Taichung’s Central Park, a redeveloped former military airfield.
  • Space is allocated 3:4:1 for museum, library, and offices, connected by a roof garden called the Culture Forest.
  • The public library launches with 460,000 physical volumes—including about 40,000 art titles—and access to roughly 500,000 digital books.
  • The inaugural exhibition, A Call of All Beings (Dec 13–Apr 12), mixes Taiwanese masters with international artists and debuts site-specific works by Haegue Yang and Michael Lin.
  • SANAA’s mesh-clad design introduces skybridges and floating outdoor stairs to blur inside and out, a civic investment that local arts leaders say could raise Taichung’s international profile.
