San Mateo County to Appoint Next Sheriff After Judge Denies Bid to Halt Process

A court ruling cleared the way for a fast, public search with a Nov. 13 deadline to fill the vacancy left by Christina Corpus’ removal.

Overview

  • Supervisors voted 3–2 to choose an appointee rather than hold a special election, with Noelia Corzo, Ray Mueller and Lisa Gauthier in favor, and David Canepa and Jackie Speier opposed.
  • Applications are open through Nov. 5, and candidates must live in San Mateo County and hold a valid POST law enforcement certification.
  • County staff will conduct public interviews and a community forum with finalists before the Board selects a new sheriff by Nov. 13.
  • Judge Nina Shapirshteyn rejected former Sheriff Christina Corpus’ request to pause the replacement effort, allowing the appointment process to proceed.
  • Undersheriff Dan Perea is carrying out sheriff duties as the Board moves forward; Corpus was ousted Oct. 14 following an advisory finding of misconduct, and her POST certification is suspended as the DA reviews the case.
