Christina Corpus, elected in 2022, is the first woman and first Latina to serve as sheriff of San Mateo County.

Overview

  • The five-member Board voted 5-0 on June 24 to oust Corpus using authority granted by Measure A, the voter-approved charter amendment effective through 2028.
  • An independent investigation by Keker, Van Nest & Peters LLP compiled 524 pages of evidence and 42 witness interviews, citing legal violations, duty neglect and obstruction.
  • Measure A passed with 84 percent voter approval in March, giving supervisors power to remove an elected sheriff for cause with a supermajority vote.
  • Corpus has denied all allegations, filed a lawsuit accusing county leaders of political motivation and procedural unfairness, and refused to resign voluntarily.
  • She has five calendar days to request a formal evidentiary hearing before a neutral officer, with the full removal process expected to take up to four months.
