San Mateo County Board Opts to Appoint Next Sheriff Under Nov. 13 Deadline

A judge refused to pause the process, clearing the way for a brief application window and public interviews.

Overview

  • Supervisors voted 3–2 to pursue an appointment instead of a special election, with Noelia Corzo, Ray Mueller and Lisa Gauthier in favor and David Canepa and Jackie Speier opposed.
  • County staff will accept applications through Nov. 5 and plan public interviews and a candidate forum before a selection by the charter’s Nov. 13 deadline.
  • Applicants must live in San Mateo County and meet professional requirements including a valid POST certificate, according to officials.
  • Undersheriff Dan Perea continues performing the sheriff’s duties without the interim title until the board names a replacement.
  • The decision follows the Oct. 14 removal of Sheriff Christina Corpus after an advisory finding of conflicts of interest and retaliation; she has retired, her POST certification is suspended, the district attorney is reviewing the matter, and San Mateo County is the first in California to remove a voter-elected sheriff.
