San Jose State Close to Hiring Ken Niumatalolo as Head Coach

Former Navy coach, now at UCLA, expected to bring a more pass-heavy system to the Spartans.

San Jose State University is close to finalizing a deal with former Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo to replace Brent Brennan as the Spartans' head coach.
Niumatalolo, who was dismissed as Navy's coach in December 2022 after 15 years, spent the 2023 season as director of leadership at UCLA under coach Chip Kelly and was recently promoted to tight ends coach.
Niumatalolo is Navy's all-time winningest coach with a career record of 109-83, including 11 bowl appearances and eight seasons with eight or more wins.
Niumatalolo has said that if he got another head coaching job, he wouldn’t run the triple-option offense again, indicating a shift towards a more wide-open, pass-heavy system for San Jose State.
Brennan, who led San Jose State to bowl games in three of the last four seasons, left for Arizona on Tuesday.
