San Jose Police Officer Mark McNamara has resigned after racist text messages, including comments about hating black people, were discovered during an unrelated investigation.
The texts revealed McNamara's attitudes towards K'aun Green, a black college football player who McNamara shot in March 2022. Green had disarmed another man during a brawl and was holding the weapon when the officer arrived.
In addition to the racial slurs, the messages also included remarks suggesting that McNamara believed he had done Green a favor by making him 'rich' through a lawsuit Green filed against the city and the police department.
San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata has denounced the discovered messages, assuring the public of the department's zero-tolerance policy towards racial bias and promising immediate action when such conduct is discovered.
A second police department employee, found to have engaged in concerning dialogue with McNamara, was placed on administrative leave pending further investigations.
