San Jose Police Investigate Fatal Shooting After Father’s Park Stabbing

A joint inquiry by the homicide unit with the county district attorney’s office is examining how a deceptive 911 call lured officers into a deadly confrontation

Overview

  • On July 13 at Cataldi Park, Mateusz Dzierbun fatally stabbed his 9-year-old son before dialing 911 to pose as a witness reporting an unknown attacker
  • Officers arriving on scene at 3:31 p.m. found Dzierbun armed with a large knife and standing over his bloodied child, and he refused repeated orders to drop the weapon
  • When Dzierbun charged at the officers, they opened fire and killed him, and no officers were wounded in the exchange
  • Chief Paul Joseph described the killing as a calculated “suicide by cop” and noted the suspect had no prior criminal record or documented mental-health history
  • The San Jose Police Department’s Homicide Unit and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office have launched a joint investigation into the stabbing, the shooting and departmental procedures
