San Francisco’s District 4 Votes on Recall of Supervisor Joel Engardio

Backlash over his push to convert the Upper Great Highway into the Sunset Dunes park in a car-dependent, majority-Asian district drives the contest.

Overview

  • Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the first results expected around 8:45 p.m. and final certification due by Oct. 16, according to election officials.
  • The recall stems from Engardio’s role in placing Proposition K on the 2024 ballot, which permanently closed a two-mile stretch of the Upper Great Highway to cars and created Sunset Dunes despite strong opposition in District 4.
  • Anti-recall forces hold a large funding edge, raising more than $800,000 with major contributions from tech figures Jeremy Stoppelman and Chris Larsen, while the pro-recall campaign reports roughly $250,000.
  • Chinese and Asian voters are pivotal in the Sunset, which is about 53% Asian, with Chinese-language ballot returns outpacing overall returns reported by the Department of Elections.
  • If Engardio is removed, Mayor Daniel Lurie will appoint an interim supervisor, and Supervisor Connie Chan says she would introduce legislation to restore vehicle access to the former roadway.
