San Francisco’s District 4 Recalls Supervisor Joel Engardio

Certification is expected by Oct. 16, enabling a mayoral interim appointment before 2026 elections.

Overview

  • Preliminary returns show about 63% backing removal with roughly 21,269 ballots counted, around 250 left to tally, and Engardio has conceded.
  • The recall grew from opposition to Engardio’s leadership of Proposition K, which closed the Great Highway to cars and created Sunset Dunes Park.
  • Proposition K remains in effect, so Sunset Dunes stays open unless the Board or voters later change policy.
  • After certification, the Board will declare the result, Mayor Daniel Lurie will sign off, and he will appoint an interim supervisor to serve until a June 2026 vote.
  • Supervisor Connie Chan says she will pursue fixes for west side traffic and access concerns and is prepared to take related questions to voters if needed.
