San Francisco’s 19th Avenue Reopens Early After First Weekend Repaving

The early finish shows Caltrans' push to compress a 40-day job into three weekend shutdowns to limit weekday disruption.

Overview

  • Caltrans, which finished work early Monday around 1:35 a.m., reopened the northbound stretch of 19th Avenue between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way.
  • The 70-hour push repaved 16 blocks, covering about six lane miles on the Highway 1 corridor in the Sunset District.
  • Two more closures are set: May 8–11 for southbound lanes from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard, then May 22–25 for both directions from Sloat to Holloway Avenue.
  • During each shutdown, two lanes will close while one lane stays open for Muni buses, emergency vehicles and local access.
  • Caltrans says the weekend plan cuts total disruption from about 40 days to 10, though neighbors reported daytime gridlock, slower sales for nearby shops and a few drivers cutting cones onto fresh asphalt.
