San Francisco Unveils Fisherman’s Wharf Plaza Plan to Replace Alioto’s

Renderings debut for a 5,000-square-foot plaza slated to replace Alioto’s by summer 2026.

Overview

  • Mayor Daniel Lurie and the Port of San Francisco released detailed designs for Fisherman’s Wharf Forward, centered on a new public plaza at the Alioto’s site on Taylor Street.
  • The plaza would offer wave-like seating, picnic tables, Bay-facing seats, string lighting and interpretive signage highlighting the wharf’s history.
  • Alioto’s is scheduled for demolition in November or December 2025, with plaza construction targeted to start by February and a public opening aimed for summer 2026.
  • The Port is seeking a tenant for the ground floor of Fisherman’s Grotto No. 9 to activate space overlooking the plaza, with pop-up vendors or short-term uses planned if leasing does not materialize.
  • Beyond near-term placemaking, the plan includes a new inner-lagoon overlook, upgraded lagoon lighting and ice machines for the fishing fleet, plus longer-term seawall and wharf work to improve flood resilience.
