San Francisco Unveils Fisherman’s Wharf Plaza, Demolition of Alioto’s Slated for Late 2025

The $10 million near-term push aims to revive foot traffic by reconnecting visitors with the working waterfront.

Overview

  • The Port released official renderings for a 5,000-square-foot plaza on Taylor Street with Bay-facing seating, picnic tables, string lighting, interpretive signage, landscaping with wind screens, pop-up space, and a playful seating sculpture.
  • Alioto’s is scheduled to be torn down in November or December, with plaza construction starting soon after and the public space targeted to open by summer 2026.
  • Officials are seeking a tenant for the ground floor of Fisherman’s Grotto No. 9 overlooking the plaza and lagoon, with pop-up food vendors planned if no lease is signed.
  • Near-term measures to support the fishing fleet include a new inner lagoon overlook along Al Scoma Way, new lighting to illuminate boats, and installation of ice machines requested by fishermen.
  • The Fisherman’s Wharf Forward program pairs these quick upgrades with longer-term resilience work to strengthen or replace seawalls and wharves, flood‑proof buildings, and modernize facilities.
