San Francisco Supervisor Engardio Faces September Recall Vote Over Highway Closure

Certification of over 10,500 signatures has set a September 16 election that could let Mayor Lurie appoint Engardio’s replacement

Supporters and organizers of the recall campaign against District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio rally on San Francisco City Hall steps. The recall qualified for the ballot on Thursday.

Overview

  • On May 29, the Department of Elections verified 10,523 valid petition signatures, exceeding the 9,911 required to trigger a special election on Sept. 16, 2025.
  • The recall stems from Engardio’s support for Proposition K, which closed a two-mile stretch of the Great Highway and converted it into Sunset Dunes park despite majority opposition in District 4.
  • Only voters registered in District 4—covering the Sunset, Outer Sunset and Parkside neighborhoods—are eligible to decide whether Engardio stays in office.
  • Engardio’s campaign to fight the recall has raised over $407,000 compared with about $67,000 raised by organizers seeking his removal.
  • If Engardio is ousted, Mayor Daniel Lurie will appoint an interim replacement, giving him decisive influence over the Board of Supervisors.
