San Francisco Speed Cameras Issued 16,500 Tickets in August as Drivers Slow Down

A state‑authorized pilot under AB 645 shows a 72% drop in speeding at 15 sampled sites.

Overview

  • SFMTA recorded 16,555 fine-bearing citations in August, the first full month of enforcement, with a San Francisco Chronicle analysis estimating more than $1.2 million in fines if all are paid.
  • One east-facing unit on Bryant Street between Second and Third generated 4,087 tickets—nearly a quarter of August’s total—while a Bayshore Boulevard camera near the Highway 101 offramp was the next highest.
  • The network now includes 56 cameras at 33 high-injury locations, with first-time violations 11–15 mph over the limit receiving warnings under state rules and all penalties treated as civil with income-based reductions.
  • SFMTA reports average speeds now below posted limits at the 15 sites studied, violations declining week over week, a 92% speeding reduction observed at one intersection, and about two-thirds of cited vehicles not reoffending.
  • Officials note early data caveats, including a brief launch error that mistakenly issued some citations instead of warnings, an omitted Geary Street camera in the August dataset, and limited granularity on higher speeding tiers.
