San Francisco Speed Cameras Begin Issuing Graduated Fines

The shift to fines follows a six-week warning period that prompted significant speed reductions, with safeguards in place for low-income motorists.

Overview

  • At 12:01 a.m. Aug. 5, San Francisco’s 33 automated cameras began issuing citations ranging from $50 for 11–15 mph violations to $500 for speeds over 100 mph.
  • During the 60-day warning phase, average daily speeding incidents fell by about 31 percent and 70 percent of drivers who received warnings did not reoffend.
  • Income-qualified motorists can apply to halve their fines or complete community service via SFMTA’s Income Verification Form.
  • Excess citation revenue beyond operational costs will be invested in street-calming measures and California’s Active Transportation Program.
  • A mandated 18-month review scheduled for September 2026 will assess the pilot’s impact and inform future traffic-safety enhancements.
