San Francisco Speed Cameras Begin Issuing Citations Tuesday

SFMTA’s pilot program has already reduced speeding by 30 percent during its warning phase.

Overview

  • The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will start issuing civil citations at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, for drivers exceeding speed limits by 11 mph or more across 33 automated camera locations.
  • Fines begin at $50 for drivers 11–15 mph over the limit and escalate to $500 for speeds above 100 mph, with no points added to driving records.
  • Each citation undergoes human review to verify plate accuracy before mailing, and low-income drivers may qualify for reduced fees or complete community service instead of payment.
  • During the 60-day warning period, SFMTA data show a roughly 30 percent drop in speeding incidents and a 70 percent non-reoffense rate among warned drivers.
  • Citation revenue will first cover program administration costs and any surplus will fund street-safety projects and California’s Active Transportation Fund.
