San Francisco Park Renamed in Honor of Grandmother Fatally Attacked

Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park commemorates the life and legacy of an Asian immigrant who became a symbol against anti-Asian violence.

The park, formerly Visitacion Valley Playground, was the site where Yik Oi Huang was brutally attacked in 2019.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony featured cultural performances and highlighted the community's resilience.
Huang's family advocated for the renaming to honor her and raise awareness about anti-Asian hate crimes.
Keonte Gathron, 24, is awaiting trial for the attack that led to Huang's death in 2020.
Huang was a seamstress and nanny who immigrated to the U.S. in 1986 and was active in her community.
