San Francisco Extends Free Child Care to 150% of AMI, With 50% Subsidies Up to 200% by Fall

Lurie is tapping a $570 million child-care reserve to cut household costs in one of the nation's most expensive cities.

Overview

  • Starting this month, families with children under 5 can access free care at roughly 500 providers, with partial subsidies scheduled to roll out in the fall.
  • The expansion is financed by unspent proceeds from 2018’s Proposition C commercial rent tax that accumulated during years of litigation.
  • City officials estimate about 12,000 additional children will become eligible for tuition support and more than 7,000 will see their aid double.
  • A companion pilot will let rising high school juniors earn associate degrees or industry certifications at City College with a guaranteed transfer to San Francisco State.
  • After a previous eligibility increase drew only about 200 sign-ups, supervisors are pressing for stronger outreach and have requested a public hearing.
