San Francisco Charges Tesla Driver With Vehicular Manslaughter in Deadly Sixth Street Crash

The move follows a months-long probe using vehicle inspections plus Waymo telemetry to assess whether a malfunction occurred.

Overview

  • Prosecutors filed felony vehicular manslaughter, felony reckless driving and three misdemeanor hit-and-run counts against 67-year-old Jia Lin Zheng.
  • Booking records show Zheng was jailed on Sept. 21 and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday with a Cantonese interpreter, with no plea entered yet.
  • Authorities say the Jan. 19 crash began off I-280, where the Tesla sideswiped multiple cars, then ran red lights on Sixth Street at roughly 90 mph.
  • The final collision killed 27-year-old Mikhael Romanenko and a dog, injured several others and thrust the victim’s car into an unoccupied Waymo robotaxi.
  • Waymo data estimated an impact speed near 98 mph as Zheng claimed sudden acceleration, while court records noted no alcohol use or signs of a recent medical episode; the victim’s family filed a wrongful-death suit in May.
