Overview

  • On June 23, Booksmith announced it would no longer carry the Harry Potter series after Rowling pledged to use franchise profits to establish the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund.
  • The fund is designed to finance legal challenges against transgender-inclusive policies by protecting sex-based rights in female spaces.
  • Booksmith staff described their decision as a refusal to financially support Rowling’s new organization given its anti-transgender stance.
  • The bookstore shared a curated list of fantasy titles for fans, featuring works by Jessica Townsend, Ursula K. Le Guin and Philip Pullman.
  • Customers who still wish to read Harry Potter are being directed to purchase used copies to avoid contributing to Rowling’s revenue.
