San Diego Unified Adds 3 High Schools to 4×4 Block Schedule for 2026–27

Leaders say longer class blocks will broaden offerings, with close evaluation to guide future campus choices.

Overview

  • The Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to shift Mira Mesa, Madison and Canyon Hills high schools to a 4×4 schedule starting next school year.
  • Under the model, students take four courses each semester for eight per year, with class periods extended to roughly 90–110 minutes.
  • District officials say the change creates room for more electives and college-level classes, additional lab time, and more chances to retake courses or graduate early.
  • SDUSD reviewed neighboring districts’ data and reported AP pass rates and grades were maintained or improved after similar shifts, and it will pilot and monitor results at the three schools before publishing a 2027–28 evaluation.
  • Teachers and families questioned the pace, clarity on whether the change is a district mandate, and staffing for expanded offerings, while remaining high schools are slated to decide by 2028–29 if the model fits for 2029–30.
