Overview

  • The ordinance creating the parking district on Park Boulevard and Sixth Avenue passed the City Council by a 6-2 vote, with Council members Raul Campillo and Jennifer Campbell dissenting.
  • Starting Oct. 1, 300 on-street spaces around Balboa Park will be metered at $2.50 per hour for up to four hours daily between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
  • City staff mapped the meter zone as south of Upas Street, west of 28th Street, north of Russ Boulevard and along the west side of Sixth Avenue.
  • A proposed tiered system for the park’s off-street lots—$12 daily permits in core areas and $6 in lower-demand areas with a 50% resident discount—is slated for Council consideration in September.
  • Paid parking is expected to generate about $1 million annually from street meters and help contribute to an estimated $11 million in revenue for the city’s budget.
