San Diego Begins Longer Meter Hours, Sunday Enforcement in First Wave of Neighborhoods

Officials say added revenue will fund neighborhood infrastructure under rules requiring local reinvestment.

San Diego is extending the hours of parking meters and ending free Sunday parking in many neighborhoods, including Pacific Beach. Here, parking meters are shown along Garnet Avenue on Friday, April 4, 2025. (Nelvin C. Cepeda / The San Diego Union-Tribune)

Overview

  • The rollout began Thursday in Pacific Beach and parts of Mid-City, with Pacific Beach meters extending to 10 p.m. and El Cajon Boulevard moving to 8 p.m. with Sunday enforcement limited to commercial areas.
  • Starting times remain 8 a.m. or 10 a.m. while end times shift later by roughly two hours depending on the neighborhood.
  • Uptown and Downtown are scheduled to adopt longer hours and Sunday enforcement in phases later this month and into September ahead of an Oct. 1 target.
  • City crews are placing stickers on meter signs to notify drivers of the changes, and waterfront meters overseen by the Port are not affected.
  • Vehicles with disabled placards may continue to park free at meters, and residents will be able to purchase permits when Sunday enforcement expands onto neighborhood streets.
