San Diego Airport Opens Signal-Free Access Road to Terminal 1

The new route bypasses stoplights to streamline traffic flows ahead of Terminal 1’s September unveiling.

The new airport road is scheduled to open on Friday. Lane 1 (on the left) directs you to Terminal 2, while lanes 2 and 3 lead to Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport. The large electronic signs will display the airlines along with the terminals from which they are operating out of. (Nelvin C. Cepeda / The San Diego Union-Tribune)

Overview

  • The on-airport three-lane roadway runs about one mile from North Harbor Drive to departure and arrival points at Terminal 1.
  • Airport officials expect the route to divert roughly 45,000 vehicles per day from North Harbor Drive, easing both airport and local congestion.
  • Overhead and roadside signs on North Harbor Drive and West Laurel Street direct motorists to the new entrance just west of West Laurel.
  • This access road is a key component of Phase 1 in the $3.8 billion Terminal 1 redevelopment, which will introduce a modernized terminal building in September.
  • Phase 2 will add 11 more gates and oversee demolition of the existing Terminal 1 structure by early 2028.
