San Antonio Rodeo Cancels Uvalde Qualifier Over EHV-1 Outbreak

State veterinarians warn of an aggressive Central Texas EHV-1 cluster linked to the Waco barrel racing event.

Overview

  • The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, WPRA and PRCA canceled the Nov. 19–22 Uvalde qualifier to prioritize animal safety following state guidance.
  • All tickets will be refunded, and organizers will announce how the cancellation affects the February San Antonio Rodeo contestant field once details are set.
  • The Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas Animal Health Commission urged exposed owners to isolate horses for at least 14 days, suspend hauling or showing, disinfect equipment, and monitor temperatures twice daily.
  • WPRA said TAHC notified them on Nov. 18 that horses from the Nov. 5–9 Waco finals showed neurological signs consistent with EHV‑1, and Central Texas clinics reported an aggressive strain.
  • Facilities implemented heightened biosecurity, including a lockdown at the Bridge Sanctuary in Robinson, and officials emphasized the virus spreads via contact and contaminated gear but does not infect humans.
