San Antonio Refills River Walk After Scheduled Drain-and-Clean

The biennial project balances cleanup with ecological protection.

Overview

  • Public Works and the San Antonio River Authority completed the River Walk draining, returning the downtown waterway to normal levels.
  • The maintenance cycle, performed every two years, was scheduled for Jan. 12–19 on the downtown River Loop from W. Josephine Street to South Alamo Street.
  • Crews recovered urban debris including shopping carts, e-scooters, phones, rings, metal chairs, bikes, car keys, purses, and coins.
  • Teams rescued native fish, removed invasive giant apple snails, and installed about 800 feet of barriers to deter snail reproduction.
  • Officials emphasize public safety, infrastructure inspection and repairs, and remind visitors not to litter or expect quick recovery of lost items.
