Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq Fined ₹1.9 Crore for Alleged Power Theft

The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Department accused the MP of bypassing meters to consume unauthorized electricity far exceeding his sanctioned load.

Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq has been fined ₹1.91 crore for alleged electricity theft after an inspection at his Sambhal residence.
Officials found that the MP's residence was using 16.48 kW of electricity despite only having two sanctioned 2 kW connections, which were reportedly bypassed.
The inspection revealed heavy electrical appliances and a six-month period during which no electricity bills were generated for the residence.
An FIR has been filed under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, and the electricity connection to the MP's house has been cut off by authorities.
Additional allegations include threats made by Barq's father against government officials during the inspection, prompting a separate FIR for obstructing official work.
