Sam Altman's eye-scanning orb lands in UK to fight Deepfakes and reward you with Crypto

Overview

  • The Orb captures an individual’s iris and facial data and transforms it into an encrypted code to confirm they are human without retaining raw biometric images.
  • Participants receive Worldcoin tokens upon enrollment and can use their anonymous World ID to access apps such as Minecraft, Reddit and Discord.
  • World has verified over 13 million users worldwide and operates roughly 1,500 Orbs, with plans to deploy an additional 12,000 devices over the next year.
  • Privacy authorities in Germany, Argentina, Kenya and South Korea have opened probes or imposed fines, and Spain and Hong Kong have banned the service outright.
  • Governments and enterprises are increasingly turning to the technology to counter AI-generated deepfakes and strengthen authentication for banking, gaming and other online services.
