Salvage Crews Begin Offloading Sugar to Free Grounded Federal Yamaska

About 400 tonnes of sugar are being removed per hour before salvage crews attempt a daytime refloat.

Overview

  • The 180-metre Federal Yamaska lost engine power early Tuesday and ran aground near Verchères, blocking part of the St. Lawrence navigation channel.
  • Canadian Coast Guard teams and Eastern Canada Response Corp. specialists have transferred about 3,200 tonnes of sugar onto two barges to reduce the ship’s draft.
  • Crews are moving cargo at a rate of roughly 400 tonnes per hour in an operation that is expected to take several hours.
  • Acting superintendent Francois Lapointe confirmed the vessel’s generators remain online, keeping onboard systems functional throughout the salvage.
  • Once sufficiently lightened, crews will conduct a daylight refloat attempt and then move the ship to the Port of Montreal for repairs under its own power or by tug.
