Salvador Sanctions Bible as Supplementary School Material as Florianópolis Measure Awaits Mayor

Municipal regulation will determine application, funding and the preservation of optional use.

Overview

  • Salvador’s mayor, Bruno Reis, signed into law the authorization to use the Bible as paradidactic material in public and private schools, with the sanction published in the city’s Official Gazette.
  • The Salvador law frames the text for cultural, historical, geographic and archaeological study in areas such as History, Literature, Arts, Philosophy and Religious Education, guarantees religious freedom and bars compulsory participation.
  • The law assigns the municipal executive to set criteria, guidelines and strategies for implementation, with costs covered by the city budget and possible supplemental allocations.
  • In Florianópolis, the city council approved PL 19436/2025 in two votes (10–3 and then 13–3 with one abstention), sending the proposal to Mayor Topázio Neto for possible sanction.
  • The Florianópolis text also permits use in private schools and homeschooling, keeps participation voluntary for students and teachers, and presents the Bible as a cultural and educational resource; sponsors include councilor João Padilha, with the Salvador initiative reported as originating from councilor Kênio Rezende.
