Salta Suspends Night Buses as SAETA Admits It Cannot Pay Debts

The state operator says a large monthly funding gap has left it without cash to meet fuel, maintenance and wage obligations and could force wider service cuts.

Overview

  • SAETA confirmed that from 00:00 on Monday 1 June no buses will operate in the Salta metropolitan area between 23:30 and 05:30 and that interurban lines will serve the city center only until 22:00 while urban lines stop at 22:30.
  • SAETA general manager Claudio Juri publicly acknowledged the company cannot pay its accumulated debt and said available resources cover roughly 10,450 million pesos against estimated system needs of about 13–14 thousand million pesos, creating a monthly shortfall of about 3–4 thousand million.
  • Operators say SAETA paid only about 40% of April certificates and estimate total arrears near 14,000 million pesos, warning that after the night suspension they will start progressive cuts to weekend services and overall frequencies if payments are not regularized.
  • The drivers' union UTA has threatened industrial action over unpaid wage differentials due at month end and SAETA has told the union it lacks funds to make the agreed disbursement.
  • Thousands of night workers, students and low‑income riders face higher travel costs as demand shifts to ride‑hailing apps and remises, and provincial guarantees for some fare waivers do not solve the operator cash‑flow problems that prompted the suspension.
