Salta Health Minister Seeks Sanitary Emergency as Anesthesiologists Challenge Shortage Narrative

Federico Mangione says emergency powers would speed training to place specialists in rural posts.

Overview

  • Health Minister Federico Mangione will ask Salta’s Legislature to declare a sanitary emergency to expand residency slots and require at least two years of interior service for doctors trained in public hospitals.
  • Mangione reports fewer than 80 anesthetists for roughly 80 hospitals and about three in the northern region, and he highlights a province‑wide shortfall in pediatric neurologists at around ten.
  • He cites reduced operating‑room availability during renovations at Hospital San Bernardo and says surgical cases are being referred to other hospitals.
  • The Salta Anesthesia Association (ASAAR) disputes claims of documented surgery suspensions and attributes bottlenecks to limited OR capacity and training opportunities, stating it has 100 associates, 18 residents in training, and 14 anesthetists working in the northern departments.
  • Mangione also plans to propose provincial control of PAMI capitation in Salta and says he will take the proposal to Buenos Aires on September 15.
