Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Rea and Bona Salami Climbs to 84 Cases

  • The Public Health Agency of Canada reports 84 confirmed illnesses and nine hospitalizations linked to Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet, Rea brand Genoa Salami Hot and Bona brand Mild Genova Salami.
  • The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recall covers items sold in Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba with UPC codes 5035226, 5049226, 5020228 and 5035228.
  • Most cases (67) have been identified in Alberta, with 15 in Ontario, one in Manitoba and one B.C. case linked to travel to Alberta.
  • Salmonella symptoms can develop days or weeks after exposure and range from gastrointestinal distress in healthy individuals to severe illness in children, pregnant people, the elderly and immunocompromised.
  • Health authorities warn that additional cases may emerge and advise consumers to destroy or return any recalled salami products.
