- Forty-five people across 18 states have fallen ill with Salmonella Montevideo infections tied to cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, including 16 hospitalizations.
- The outbreak extends to six cruise ships that departed U.S. ports between late March and mid-April, accounting for at least eight passenger cases.
- The cucumbers were sold from April 29 through May 19 and shipped to grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals and distribution centers nationwide.
- FDA officials detected the outbreak strain in a cucumber sample at a Pennsylvania distribution center and are probing multiple other Salmonella strains found in related samples.
- Major retailers including Target and Walmart have recalled whole cucumbers and dozens of prepared products containing the potentially contaminated cucumbers.
