Salmonella Linked to Recalled Salami Sickens 72 Canadians

Health officials have recorded seven hospitalizations in the latest update from the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Overview

  • Seventy-two Canadians fell ill between mid-April and mid-June after consuming recalled salami products.
  • Of the confirmed cases, 57 were in Alberta, 14 in Ontario and one in Manitoba.
  • The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recalled Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet and Hot plus Bona brand Mild Genova Salami on June 10.
  • Salmonella infections can cause fever, headache, vomiting and diarrhea and pose serious threats to children, pregnant people, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.
  • Consumers are advised to inspect salami packaging for product codes 5035226, 5049226, 5020228 and 5035228 and not consume any matching items.
