Salmonella and STEC Contamination Triggers Nationwide Meat Recalls in Germany

Authorities are investigating contamination sources following the nationwide withdrawal of the affected meat products.

Overview

  • On July 31, die ROSTOCKER Wurst- und Schinkenspezialitäten GmbH recalled its 250 g Frühstücksknacker (batch 335501 with minimum durability dates from July 27 to August 9, 2025) after routine tests detected Salmonella.
  • On August 1, Franz Wiltmann GmbH & Co. KG launched a recall of its Rein Rind Salami 70 g (batch L2517700010 with minimum durability dates of August 14, 21 and 25, 2025) following the discovery of Shiga toxin–producing E. coli.
  • Both recalled products were distributed through major retailers including Rewe, Edeka and Netto.
  • Affected items have been withdrawn from sale nationwide and retailers are accepting returns without receipts for full refunds.
  • German food-safety authorities issued over 300 public warnings in 2024, with recent recalls underscoring supply chain quality-control gaps.
