Salim-Sulaiman, Shankar Mahadevan Announce 'Shringaar' Tribute to Ustad Zakir Hussain for Sept. 1 Release

The classical–pop track from Bhoomi 2025 features a largely one-take vocal by Mahadevan recorded to honor the late tabla maestro.

Overview

  • The collaborators said the single will arrive September 1 as part of the sixth season of Salim-Sulaiman’s Bhoomi series.
  • The concept originated in late October 2024 with a plan to pair Mahadevan’s voice with Zakir Hussain’s tabla, but the approach was paused as the maestro’s health declined.
  • Basic melody work was completed in November 2024, and the artists decided to finish the song after Zakir Hussain died December 15, 2024.
  • Composed by Salim-Sulaiman with vocals by Shankar Mahadevan, Shringaar is described as a classical–pop fusion whose lyrics affirm that love needs no ornamentation.
  • Salim Merchant said Mahadevan’s classical section was captured in a spontaneous single take, and Mahadevan called the release a collective tribute reflecting lessons learned from touring with Zakir Hussain.
