Salford Mother Who Falsely Claimed £56,124 in Universal Credit Given Community Order

Prosecutors will seek to recover the overpaid funds at a February 4, 2026 Proceeds of Crime hearing.

Overview

  • Sumira Amin, 36, pleaded guilty to two offences of dishonestly making a false statement to obtain payment.
  • She received Universal Credit from July 2019 to October 2022 after claiming to be a single parent renting, but Land Registry records showed she co-owned a Salford home bought in 2018.
  • Investigators found she was named on the mortgage and held two current accounts and an ISA, and she changed her account in July 2024 after initially denying cohabitation.
  • Judge Paul Lawton imposed a 12-month community order with 10 rehabilitation activity days and noted she was not the driving force behind the fraud, citing her lack of prior convictions.
  • Prosecutor Amy Edwards said the overpayment totaled £56,124, which the Crown will seek to recover under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
