Overview
- Sakurai City announced the nickname “Komaki” for the reconstructed dog from the Makimuku site and unveiled the model at City Hall with Mayor Masanori Matsui.
- The name was selected from 2,143 public entries submitted from April through June, with proposals often nodding to Himiko and Makimuku.
- The bones were excavated in 2015 and dated to the early third century, a period the research center says could overlap with Himiko’s lifetime.
- Researchers estimate the animal was a young female about 1.5 years old, roughly 48 cm at the shoulder and about 58 cm long, similar in size to modern Shikoku or Kishu females.
- The city is displaying the model and the naming plaque on the first floor of City Hall through October 20.
