Avila's injury is a significant lateral ankle sprain, but scans showed no further damage such as a tear or fracture.
He is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season on November 4 against Santa Clara.
Last season, Avila averaged 17.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists, earning first-team All-Missouri Valley honors.
Avila transferred to Saint Louis from Indiana State along with coach Josh Schertz and guard Isaiah Swope.
