Sainsbury's Recalls Two Houmous Lines Over Suspected E. Coli Contamination

Regulators say the move is precautionary after specific batches were flagged for possible STEC.

Overview

  • Customers are told not to eat JS Classic Houmous 315g (batch 8001352, use by 13 September 2025) and JS Lemon & Coriander Houmous 200g (batch 8062998, use by 14 September 2025).
  • Sainsbury’s is offering full refunds in stores and says receipts are not required for returns of the affected tubs.
  • Point‑of‑sale recall notices are being displayed nationwide, with several outlets stating signage will remain in place until 3 October.
  • The Food Standards Agency says the products might be contaminated with Shiga toxin‑producing E. coli, and the recall has been initiated as a precaution.
  • Health guidance notes STEC can cause diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea, with rare cases leading to kidney failure, as UKHSA recorded 2,544 cases in England in 2024.
