Sailing Yacht Fire Off Friesland Coast Extinguished Before Rescue

Rescuers evacuated the crew for suspected smoke inhalation after they doused a cable fire aboard their yacht with a handheld extinguisher.

  • The blaze broke out Thursday afternoon about half a nautical mile from Hooksiel harbor on the Wangerland coast.
  • DGzRS crews identified a cable fire in the yacht’s electrical system as the likely source of the flames.
  • A 30-year-old woman and her 31-year-old partner used a small extinguisher to control the fire and moved to the foredeck.
  • The DGzRS rescue cruiser Bernhard Gruben arrived on scene and took the couple aboard for safety.
  • Both sailors were transported to a nearby hospital with suspected smoke inhalation for treatment.
