Overview
- The installation raised the central tower to 162.91 meters, leaving roughly ten meters to reach its planned 172.5-meter apex.
- With its new height, the basilica surpasses Germany’s Ulm Minster (161.53 meters) to claim the world’s tallest-church mark.
- The 24-ton piece was preassembled on a platform at 54 meters and lifted by crane after being fabricated off-site in Germany and trucked in via Carrer Mallorca.
- When the remaining arms are installed, the cross will stand 17 meters tall with a white glazed ceramic and glass finish shaped by Gaudí-inspired geometry.
- Project leaders aim to inaugurate the completed tower during Gaudí centenary events in the first half of 2026, with public access to the cross arms expected no sooner than 2027.
